Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva emphasized the need for swift and flexible measures against criminal organizations deforesting the Amazon as he signed a measure on June 17 to expand security in the region. The initiative, “Amazon Plan: Security and Sovereignty,” allocates 318 million reals ($58.7 million) to enhance state security, part of a larger 1.2 billion reals plan launched a year ago. The plan includes reinforcing equipment and establishing an international police cooperation center in Manaus. Funded by the Amazon Fund, supported by Norway and Germany, this effort aims to curb deforestation and reinforce regional security.
