Nitin Gupta, Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), dismissed criticism regarding the tax department’s adjustment of refunds against dues dating back 10-12 years. In an exclusive interview, Gupta clarified that there is no time limit for collecting outstanding demands, emphasizing that cases from several years ago can still be pursued. He stated that demands must be adjusted, and appeals processed, irrespective of the year, emphasizing the taxpayer’s opportunity to respond to demand notices. Gupta also highlighted the government’s collection of Rs 100 crore in tax deducted at source (TDS) from crypto exchanges over the past six months till September.
