A study conducted by local health authorities and Mekele University has verified 1,329 deaths from hunger in Ethiopia’s Tigray region since a cease-fire concluded a two-year conflict in November. Hunger now accounts for over 68% of deaths investigated, highlighting a dire humanitarian situation exacerbated by the suspension of food aid by the United States and the United Nations due to a massive scheme to steal humanitarian grain in Tigray. The pause, extended to the entire country in June, has led to a sharp increase in deaths from all causes. With around 5.4 million Tigray residents relying on aid and over 20 million Ethiopians needing food assistance, the study underscores the urgent need for intervention.
