The Meerut CGST Commissionerate has dismantled a syndicate orchestrating fraudulent claims of Input Tax Credit (ITC) surpassing Rs 1,000 crore. The anti-evasion unit commenced an investigation in October 2023, exposing a network of 232 fake firms engaged in deceptive billing practices. The probe disclosed that 91 of these firms were registered under a single mobile number. The syndicate, spread across the nation, illicitly obtained Rs 1,048 crore in ITC, with reported goods transactions totaling Rs 5,842 crore. Three individuals linked to the fraudulent scheme have been arrested, as announced by CGST officials.
