The All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) has voiced strong opposition to the Central Government’s plan to allow Over-The-Counter (OTC) drugs to be sold without a license in India. AIOCD President JS Shinde emphasized that such a move would violate existing drug laws and Supreme Court directives. Concerns raised include the potential for drug abuse, adverse reactions, and compromised healthcare access. The group also highlighted risks such as counterfeit drugs and inadequate pharmacist consultation. With a membership of 12.40 lac chemists nationwide, AIOCD stresses the need for comprehensive consideration of the proposal’s implications and urges involvement of all stakeholders in the regulatory process.
