China has officially restored diplomatic relations with Nauru after the Pacific island nation severed its ties with Taiwan earlier in January. Nauru’s decision left Taiwan with only 12 remaining diplomatic allies. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has been gradually poaching Taiwan’s diplomatic allies as part of its efforts to punish Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party. China does not recognize Taiwan’s government, its right to diplomatic recognition, or participation in global bodies. Nauru’s move is considered a significant step in its development, according to its government. Taiwan now has official ties with 11 countries and the Vatican.
