The Congress party moved the Delhi High Court challenging the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal’s decision to reject its plea for halting the recovery of outstanding taxes for the 2018-19 assessment year. Senior advocate Vivek Tankha emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating that the party’s accounts had been frozen. The tribunal had recently dismissed the Congress’ appeal against penalties imposed by the Income Tax department, amounting to ₹210 crore. The Congress had previously criticized the freezing of its funds as an assault on democracy, especially with national elections looming.
