Russian cybercrime suspect Alexander Vinnik, arrested in Greece in 2017, has pleaded partially guilty to money laundering charges. Vinnik faces a potential prison term of less than 10 years, down from a potential life sentence, as part of a plea bargain. Accused of laundering over $4 billion through bitcoin, he awaits trial in California. Vinnik was extradited from Greece to France, where he was sentenced to five years in prison before being sent to the United States in 2022. The U.S. alleges he operated BTC-e, a platform facilitating cybercrime and money laundering, with a maximum penalty of 55 years in prison if convicted. Russia has sought his return, but he remains in U.S. custody.
