The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) detected 6,323 cases of GST evasion amounting to ₹198,324 crore in 2023. This resulted in voluntary tax payments of ₹28,362 crore and the arrest of 140 individuals involved in the evasion. Sectors such as online gaming, casinos, insurance, and expat salaries were flagged for non-compliance. The GST department issued tax demand notices of ₹1.12 lakh crore to several online gaming companies, leading to ongoing litigation. The department also addressed fake input tax credit claims by insurance companies. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) offered relief on GST for expat salaries in MNCs.
