The U.S. FDA is probing products from Indian spice giants MDH and Everest after Hong Kong banned sales due to alleged high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide. Hong Kong and Singapore halted sales of select spice blends, citing ethylene oxide contamination. MDH and Everest are yet to respond. While Everest asserts its products’ safety, MDH’s stance remains unknown. The spices, popular globally, face scrutiny from India’s FSSAI and Spices Board. Inspections at their plants aim to identify quality issues. This isn’t the first controversy for MDH; in 2019, some batches faced U.S. recalls over salmonella contamination.
