France’s Senate, with a majority vote of 267 to 50, supports the government’s initiative to embed the “freedom” to have an abortion in the constitution. President Emmanuel Macron, in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision impacting abortion rights, pledged to constitutionally safeguard the right to terminate a pregnancy, legal in France since 1974. Despite conservative opposition, the National Assembly previously backed the move in January. The constitutional change now moves to a special Congress session on March 4 for a final vote. Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti hails this potential development as a “historic day,” positioning France as a global pioneer in constitutionally protecting women’s freedom regarding their bodies.
