The ongoing conflict in Gaza, exacerbated by Israeli airstrikes and invasion, poses a severe threat to the stateless Palestinian refugees who make up 81% of the population. This crisis mirrors the historical displacement that began in 1948 and has recurred in events like the 1967 war. With thousands of civilian casualties and an imminent risk of forced displacement, the exclusion of Palestinians from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) protection mandate exacerbates their vulnerability. Urgently, the international community must enforce and enhance the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) mandate and include Palestinians in the UNHCR to coordinate global protection efforts.
