The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has reported a concerning global trend, stating that nearly half of the world’s countries are experiencing a decline in democratic indicators. Established democracies, including the United States, Austria, and the United Kingdom, are grappling with setbacks, such as social group inequality, press freedom issues, and access to justice concerns. The report, “The Global State of Democracy 2023,” reveals a six-year democratic recession, the longest observed since 1975. Issues include weakening rule of law, erosion of checks and balances, and challenges in Africa highlighted by coup waves. Despite some positive developments, overall, the global democratic landscape is depicted as negative.
