The Indian government has set a conservative target of 30-32 million tonnes for wheat procurement during the 2024-25 rabi marketing season, despite the Ministry of Agriculture expecting a record wheat production of 114-115 million tonnes in the 2023-24 crop year. The decision was made in consultation with state food secretaries. The government also fixed procurement targets for paddy and millets, encouraging states to focus on millet procurement for crop diversification and improved nutrition. The minimum support price (MSP) will be a crucial factor in government agencies’ procurement of wheat and paddy.
