A study by the National Foundation for India (NFI) highlights severe health issues and economic instability for marginalized communities as India reduces coal dependency. About 75% of participants suffer from chronic diseases due to coal pollutants. The coal transition is expected to cause significant job losses, particularly impacting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. These groups, with limited educational access, will struggle to find new employment. NFI’s Pooja Gupta noted lower incomes in coal-dependent regions and a lack of welfare access.
