The Health Ministry is reportedly considering bringing nutraceuticals, probiotics, food for special medical purpose, and food for special dietary use under the oversight of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). Currently, these items fall under the purview of the Foods Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The ministry is concerned about unsupervised consumption, overpricing, and health claims associated with such products. A committee, chaired by the Secretary of Health, has been proposed to address overlapping concerns between nutraceuticals and drugs, with representation from FSSAI, CDSCO, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Ayush, and the Department of Pharmaceuticals.
