Ongoing heavy monsoon rains in southern Myanmar have led to widespread flooding, displacing over 10,000 people and disrupting rail lines connecting major cities. Bago township experienced the highest rainfall in 59 years, prompting residents to abandon their homes. Emergency rescue teams reported flooding of at least 7-8 feet in low-lying areas and 3-4 feet downtown. Trains departing from Mandalay and Mawlamyine were halted, and departures from Yangon were canceled due to flooded rail lines. Relief efforts, including 32 shelters in Bago, schools, and monasteries, are underway to provide essential assistance. The flooding follows earlier incidents in July and August, underscoring Myanmar’s vulnerability to extreme weather during the monsoon season.
