The Confederation of ATM Industry (CATMI) has requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to raise the interchange fee for ATM cash withdrawals to Rs 23 per transaction. This fee, which is paid by the card-issuing bank to the bank operating the ATM, was last increased in 2021 from Rs 15 to Rs 17, with a maximum charge of Rs 21. The proposed hike aims to boost funding for ATM businesses. Currently, savings account holders get five free transactions per month at their bank’s ATMs and three free transactions at other banks’ ATMs in major cities.
