Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) is set to commission its new oil refinery in Barmer, Rajasthan, by January 2023. The 9 million tonnes per year refinery, 76% mechanically complete, aims to address the increasing fuel demand in northern India. HPCL’s director for refineries, S Bharathan, stated that the refinery would operate at 75-80% capacity in the first year, reaching full capacity by 2027. The Barmer project, part of India’s refining capacity expansion target, includes a petrochemical complex. HPCL aims to bridge the fuel production-consumption gap with the Barmer refinery and the recently expanded Vizag facility.
