The Indian Income Tax Department has initiated the process of eliminating outstanding small income tax demands below Rs 1 lakh per taxpayer. This move comes after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement during the interim budget to withdraw small outstanding direct tax demands of Rs 25,000 or less up to assessment year 2009-10 and Rs 10,000 or less for the financial years from 2010-11 to 2014-15. The waiver, which will be implemented by the Directorate of Income Tax (Systems) at the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC), is expected to be completed within two months.
