The Indian government, in its interim budget for 2024, has allocated Rs 10,000 crore for a rooftop solar and free electricity scheme. Under this initiative, 1 crore households will receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the scheme, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, will save households between Rs 15,000 and Rs 18,000 per year, allowing them to sell surplus electricity to distribution companies. Additionally, the budget includes viability gap funding for an initial capacity of 1 GW of offshore wind power.
