In an effort to boost domestic availability and control prices, the Indian government has imposed a ban on onion exports until March 31, 2024. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) made this announcement, amending the export policy from free to prohibited. The move aims to address concerns over escalating onion prices, with local vendors currently selling the staple vegetable at Rs 70-Rs 80 per kg in the national capital. In October, the government had initiated the sale of buffer onion stock at a subsidized rate of Rs 25 per kg to alleviate the burden on consumers.
