The Indian government has recovered Rs 852 crore through an amnesty scheme for exporters to settle defaults in export obligations under advance and EPCG authorisations. This figure is expected to rise as more data is compiled. The scheme, part of the new Foreign Trade Policy, allowed exporters to regularize pending cases by paying exempted customs duties plus interest. As of now, 6,705 applications were filed under the scheme. Small exporters have requested an extension until September, citing difficulties in meeting obligations. India’s merchandise exports increased by 1% to $34.99 billion in April, with a trade deficit of $19.1 billion.
