A joint venture between Indian and Russian firms has secured the management contract for Sri Lanka’s Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. Once dubbed the “world’s emptiest airport,” the USD 209 million facility faced a lack of flights. The decision comes after the Sri Lankan Cabinet approved an Expression of Interest process, receiving five proposals. Shaurya Aeronautics (Pvt) Ltd of India and Airports of Regions Management Company of Russia will manage the airport for 30 years. The project, funded through Chinese commercial loans, aims to revive the airport’s fortunes amid heavy losses since 2016.
