India’s coal imports saw a slight uptick of 1.65% to 212.24 Million Tonnes (MT) during April-January of the current fiscal year, compared to the same period last year. Data from mjunction services ltd, a B2B e-commerce platform, revealed that non-coking coal imports remained stable at 136.47 MT, while coking coal imports increased to 47.32 MT. January witnessed a surge in coal imports to 19.81 MT, with non-coking coal at 12.10 MT and coking coal at 4.50 MT. Despite this, the demand for imported coal is expected to weaken due to ample availability of domestic coal. India’s coal production during April-January rose to 784.11 MT, indicating a shift towards self-sufficiency in coal supply.
