An official inquiry into New Zealand’s deadliest mass shooting, the Christchurch mosque attacks of March 2019, has begun with a traditional Maori welcome and a reading from the Koran in honor of the 51 Muslim worshippers killed. Perpetrated by Australian white supremacist Brenton Tarrant, the attack prompted a six-week coroner’s inquiry examining aspects such as emergency service response, potential accomplices, and causes of death. While not focusing on liability or negligence, Deputy Chief Coroner Brigitte Windley aims to shed light on the incident and may make recommendations to prevent similar events. Findings are expected in 2024.
