The Karnataka High Court has ordered the Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement to issue a widow identity card to a 52-year-old widow of an ex-serviceman within two weeks, ensuring all associated benefits. Justice M. Nagaprasanna criticized the department for neglecting the widow’s plight and emphasized empathy towards her situation. The rejection of her application based on her husband’s ex parte divorce was deemed incorrect, as the divorce was not finalized before his death. The court denounced the stigma of divorce and affirmed the widow’s entitlement to benefits. Allegations of familial interference in the divorce process were also raised by the petitioner.
