The Madras High Court upheld the Tamil Nadu government’s rule that candidates must score at least 40 out of 150 in the Tamil language paper to have their general studies paper evaluated for public service positions. This requirement, part of the 2016 Tamil Nadu Government Servants Act, was challenged by 10 English medium candidates. They argued it unfairly favored Tamil medium candidates. Justice G.R. Swaminathan dismissed the petitions, stating the rule ensures government employees can effectively interact with the public in Tamil. The court emphasized that recruitment criteria, including language proficiency, are reasonable and within the government’s rights to enforce.
