The Madras High Court played a crucial role in the selection of the Indian Men’s Bridge Team that won silver at the Asian Games. In a case involving G. Venkatesh, an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), the court dismissed his appeal seeking permission to represent the Bridge Federation of India (BFI) in international tournaments. The court upheld BFI’s stance that only Indian citizens could represent the country in such events. Venkatesh argued that as an OCI, he should be allowed to represent BFI, not India. The court, citing a government policy decision, emphasized that participation in international sports events is reserved for Indian citizens, not foreign nationals of Indian origin.
