A magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit northwestern Afghanistan on October 11, with its epicenter located about 17 miles outside Herat, the provincial capital, and at a depth of 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Herat Governor’s Office reported significant damage to districts adjacent to areas previously affected by recent quakes, with mobile medical teams and officials working to assist and transfer injured individuals to hospitals. Just a few days earlier, on October 7, two 6.3 magnitude earthquakes resulted in numerous casualties in western Afghanistan, with more than 2,000 reported deaths according to Taliban officials. Afghanistan has faced seismic challenges in the past, with a deadly earthquake in June 2022 causing substantial damage and casualties.
