West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a pause on three new criminal laws that replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act. Her appeal follows a meeting with Congress leader P. Chidambaram and reflects a rare show of unity among Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc. Banerjee criticized the passing of these laws, known as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakhsya Adhiniyam, and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, during a session when 146 MPs were suspended, calling it an “authoritarian” move.
