Aswin Sekhar, hailing from a small Kerala town, has had an asteroid named after him by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in recognition of his contributions to meteor research. The asteroid, discovered in 2000, will be known as (33928) Aswinsekhar = 2000 LJ27. Three other Indians, including astronomer Kumar Venkataramani and planetary geologist Rutu Parekh, also had asteroids named after them. Aswin’s expertise in meteor sciences is seen as a tribute to those in the field, which is often overshadowed by other areas of astrophysics. His work has revealed the gravitational dynamics behind meteor clusters, enhancing understanding of celestial events like the Perseid meteor shower.
