The Silicon Photonic Research Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is set to promote the commercialization of silicon photonics products. The center, named Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS, aims to collaborate with start-ups and foster silicon photonic chip manufacturing in India. Focused on photonic processors for high-speed transceivers in data centers and optical quantum computing processors, the initiative aligns with applications in optical communication, data centers, IoT, 5G/6G communication, and quantum computing. MeitY Secretary S Krishnan highlighted the potential for India to leapfrog global advancements in this technology sector.
