Meta has announced plans to open its Horizon OS, the operating system behind its Meta Quest mixed-reality headset, to third-party hardware manufacturers like ASUS, Lenovo, and Microsoft. Horizon OS features inside-out tracking for gesture control, high-resolution passthrough, scene understanding, and spatial anchors. Developers can leverage these features to create new apps, monetized through platforms like the Meta Horizon Store. The social layer of Meta Quest will extend to devices running Horizon OS, enabling seamless interaction across different devices. Hardware manufacturers, including ASUS’s Republic of Gamers, Lenovo, and Microsoft’s Xbox, are developing mixed-reality devices powered by Horizon OS, all built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform.
