In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, only 28 Muslim MPs are likely to be elected, a slight increase from 26 in 2019, but still the third lowest in history. Despite being the second-largest religious community in India, Muslim representation remains low, even in Muslim-majority constituencies. Analysts attribute this to political parties’ reluctance to field Muslim candidates due to fears of polarizing contests, especially since the BJP’s rise in 2014. The Congress, TMC, and SP have significantly reduced their Muslim candidates compared to previous elections.
