Following Singapore and Hong Kong, Nepal has banned the sale and import of specific spice-mix products manufactured by Indian brands due to suspected ethylene oxide contamination. MDH and Everest brands’ four spice-mix products have been prohibited in Nepal, with residue contents of ethylene oxide exceeding prescribed limits. The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has issued a notice urging importers and traders to recall these products. Meanwhile, India’s spice export may decline by nearly 40% in FY25 if ethylene oxide contamination issues in spices aren’t addressed promptly, according to the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders.
