The International Labour Organization (ILO) welcomes a new Global Framework for addressing chemical and waste-related environmental and health risks. Introduced at the fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5), the framework sets specific targets for managing chemicals throughout their lifecycle, including the phased removal of highly hazardous substances. Since 2006, the ILO, along with workers’ and employers’ groups and governments, has played a role in its development. The framework emphasizes a “Just Transition” principle, aiming to align environmental sustainability with decent work, social inclusion, human rights, and poverty reduction. Hazardous chemicals currently cause 1.1 million worker fatalities annually, impacting the global economy. The framework’s 28 targets aim to integrate chemical management with broader global agendas, while emphasizing the incorporation of labor standards for worker safety.
