Maldives’ newly sworn-in President, Mohamed Muizzu, has formally requested India to withdraw its military personnel from the country, conveying the message to Indian Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju during a meeting. President Muizzu, elected in September, stated that the Maldivian people had given him a mandate to make this request and hoped India would honor their democratic will. While Indian sources argue that the unarmed military personnel are there for training and equipment maintenance, President Muizzu announced on November 17 that the country will not host any foreign military personnel. India and the Maldives plan to discuss workable solutions for continued cooperation.
