The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has initiated a suo-moto case following a report by The Hindu revealing the presence of hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste at the Bhopal gas tragedy site. The waste, deposited by Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) over 39 years ago, remains uncleared, leading to groundwater contamination. The NGT issued notices to Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Secretary, Central Ground Water Authority, Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and Central Pollution Control Board. The authorities face scrutiny for non-compliance with environmental laws in managing the hazardous waste, impacting the health of residents.
