North Korea has declared its intention to expel U.S. soldier Pvt. Travis King, who, in July, illegally crossed the heavily fortified border separating North and South Korea. The Korean Central News Agency reported that King confessed to the unauthorized entry, citing grievances against “inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination” within the U.S. Army and disillusionment with the perceived inequalities in American society. The report did not specify the date or destination for King’s expulsion. His border-crossing incident marked the first instance of an American being detained in North Korea in nearly five years. King was part of a civilian tour and spontaneously ran across the border.
