The Orissa High Court has mandated the establishment of District Education Infrastructure Safety Audit Committees in each district to prevent accidents such as wall collapses and fires on school campuses. This decision follows a case involving a student’s death from a wall collapse in Ganjam district in 2016. The court directed the state to compensate the deceased student’s family with ₹8 lakh, in addition to the ₹2 lakh already provided. The committees, led by district collectors and including education officers and engineers, are to conduct annual safety audits and issue certificates.
