In February 2024, 443 infrastructure projects in India, each with investments exceeding Rs 150 crore, faced cost overruns totaling more than Rs 4.92 lakh crore, according to an official report. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation revealed that out of 1,902 projects monitored, 443 experienced cost overruns and 764 were delayed. The original cost of these projects was Rs 27.08 lakh crore, with the anticipated completion cost estimated at Rs 32.00 lakh crore, indicating an overall overrun of Rs 4.92 lakh crore. While 568 projects were delayed based on the latest schedule, the report highlighted various reasons for delays, including land acquisition, environmental clearances, and infrastructure support.
