The Madras High Court has temporarily stayed the investigation into a case filed by Salem city police against Periyar University Vice-Chancellor R. Jagannathan and others. The case involved allegations of misappropriation of university funds and the use of offensive language against a person from a Scheduled Caste. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh granted the stay, expressing concerns about the case’s motive and the inclusion of charges under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The court observed that the abuse allegations lacked context and ordered a hearing for the quashing of the FIR after four weeks.
