The Philippine Coast Guard accused Chinese vessels of engaging in “dangerous” maneuvers during a nine-day patrol near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The patrol was conducted to ensure the safety of Filipino fishermen and deliver provisions to the area, which has been a flashpoint between China and the Philippines since 2012. The Philippine Coast Guard stated that Chinese Coast Guard vessels performed dangerous maneuvers, including crossing the bow of the Philippine vessel, and shadowed it on more than 40 occasions. China claimed that the Philippine vessel had “illegally intruded” into the waters, and its actions were in accordance with the law.
