The death toll from a 6.7-magnitude earthquake in the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines has risen to five. The quake triggered power cuts, caused part of a shopping mall ceiling to collapse in General Santos City, and led people to flee into the streets. Falling debris from the mall resulted in a woman’s death, while a couple was reported dead earlier in General Santos City. Another person was killed by a falling steel structure in Glan, Sarangani province, and an elderly man died in Davao Occidental province after being struck by a large rock. The Philippines is in a seismically active zone known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
