The State Election Commission (SEC) of Kerala has proposed introducing multiple qualifying dates for voter enrollment in local body elections. This change would allow eligible citizens more opportunities throughout the year to register to vote. Currently, the Election Commission of India (EC) provides four qualifying dates—January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1—for enrolling in the voters’ list used for Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly elections. The SEC aims to adopt a similar system for local body elections.
