The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intends to broaden access to the e-rupee by involving non-bank payment system operators, such as third-party payment app providers like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. Previously, the central bank limited e-rupee transactions to banks, resulting in subdued volumes. By allowing third-party apps to offer e-rupee through CBDC wallets, the RBI aims to increase accessibility and transaction volumes while testing the CBDC platform’s resilience. Changes will be made to facilitate this, with third-party apps needing RBI approval to offer CBDC wallets. The move follows enhancements to the e-rupee, including integration with UPI and programmability for targeted cash transfers, to boost transaction activity.
