Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, has submitted a proposal to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the $8.5 billion merger of Viacom18 and Star India Pvt Ltd. The merger aims to combine the entertainment businesses of Viacom18 and Star India, creating a joint venture held by RIL, Viacom18, and existing TWDC subsidiaries. While Reliance believes the merger won’t impact competition significantly, they’ve identified key markets for CCI assessment. Upon completion, the joint venture, chaired by Nita Ambani, would become the largest entity in India’s media sector, with extensive TV channels, OTT platforms, and a substantial viewer base.
