A recent study conducted by the Areca Research Centre at Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences has declared the Tirthahalli variety of areca as the best among different types grown in Karnataka. The study involved 60 participants evaluating various areca varieties based on appearance, taste, and aroma. The Tirthahalli variety, known for its superior quality, was favored due to the conducive climate and expertise of small-scale growers in the region. Feedback from 80 farmers further confirmed its high-grade quality and market value. Grading processes revealed that Tirthahalli areca kernels command premium prices, with Nuli and Hasa grades fetching the highest rates. Chemical analysis indicated medium arecoline content in Tirthahalli arecanuts, reinforcing its reputation as a prized cultivar in Karnataka.
