Russia’s attempt to regain a seat on the U.N.’s Human Rights Council failed as it faced a significant defeat in the General Assembly election on October 10th. Competing against Albania and Bulgaria for two seats representing the East European regional group, Russia received just 83 votes, while Bulgaria secured 160 votes, and Albania received 123. Although Russia claimed a silent majority’s support, these results show its divisive position. The U.S. and other countries had urged General Assembly members to vote against Russia due to its ongoing actions in Ukraine, which are seen as war crimes and atrocities. The Human Rights Council’s credibility has been questioned for admitting countries with poor human rights records, but the U.N. believes the elected countries have earned their place.
